Your Commercial Driver’s License for the state of Georgia is just a few steps away, but you have to follow some specific instructions in order to make sure you don’t waste a trip to the DDS. Right off the bat, it’s imperative you have a few pieces of paperwork for the application or you won’t get past the receptionist. First you’ll need a medical certificate that can prove that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. These can only be obtained from a licensed medical examiner, as listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) National Registry. Once you have the certificate it generally lasts two years, unless the medical examiner feels you have a condition that needs monitoring, like hypertension. In that case you may have to get the certificate reassessed at a timeline that is at discretion of the examiner. In addition, you need to have an already valid driver’s license to drive a motor vehicle and proof of citizenship or permanent legal residency. For this last part, a social security card, green card or birth certificate is usually the kind of thing that is required. That will get you as far as the test (along with a nominal fee), but anyone who wants to get a CDL needs to stare down the gauntlet of a 50 question, 60-minute exam that can get very tricky. You need a score of at least 40 out of 50 to pass, otherwise you have to leave the DDS and come back another day. That will be a waste of time that you could spend working. Make sure you have the knowledge you need to pass the exam the first time by studying the official Georgia state commercial driver’s manual and taking our free CDL General Knowledge practice test. The test will give you insights into the exact kind of questions that they will ask on the real test so you can be as thoroughly prepared as is possible. Start practicing today!
